The measure affects blocks 2 and 3 of the Residencial San Francisco, located on Fray Junípero Serra street. Municipal technicians have assessed that some of the pre-existing cracks in the building have widened, particularly in certain pillars, after the tremors registered on Tuesday.
Technicians deem a more thorough inspection necessary to determine if residents can safely return to their homes. The City Council has emphasized the preventive nature of the evacuation, as initial inspections have not revealed major structural damage, although the condition of some pillars requires detailed assessment.
Since the earthquake at 10:37 AM on Tuesday, municipal services, along with the Local Police and Civil Protection volunteers, have been addressing incidents reported by residents. So far, no personal injuries or serious incidents have occurred in the municipality.
For those affected who do not have alternative accommodation, the Municipal Theater has been set up as a temporary shelter. The Consistory will continue to monitor the situation of the buildings and will keep residents informed about the progress of the damage assessment.
“"Evidently, there is no imminent danger nor has the population been at risk, but from a preventive standpoint and until structural damage can be analyzed, the City Council has decided to proceed with the evacuation."
First Vice-President and Minister of Presidency, Antonio Sanz, confirmed that approximately 600 people have been preemptively evacuated from 371 homes in Las Gabias. The areas most affected by the day's seismic movements were Íllora, Alhendín, Armilla, La Zubia, and the capital city of Granada.
Sanz explained that, after meeting with architects and technicians, the condition of the affected homes will be evaluated. While severe structural damage is not anticipated, damage to cornices and facades has been observed and requires detailed assessment.
