The decision by the Diocese of Asidonia-Jerez to reject María Zarzuela's candidacy for the presidency of the Union of Brotherhoods has generated considerable controversy within the brotherhood community of Jerez. The Diocese's position has drastically shifted in just one month, leading to misunderstanding and online debate.
In early April, the Bishop of the Diocese had issued a decree modifying the requirements for candidates aspiring to the presidency or permanent board of the Union of Brotherhoods. This modification, justified by the prelate as a response to "consultations posed," had cleared the way for Zarzuela's candidacy, who had been working diligently to assemble her team. The news of her presentation had been met with enthusiasm, particularly from those advocating for women's roles within the brotherhoods.
However, last Friday, the Diocese announced that María Zarzuela's candidacy "has not been deemed suitable, as it does not comply with the Diocesan Regulations." This announcement, made on a less conspicuous date like the Friday of the Horse Fair, has been interpreted by some as an attempt to minimize its impact.
Despite inquiries from various media outlets, including this newspaper, the Diocese has only referred to the official statement, offering no detailed explanations for the exclusion. This lack of transparency has fueled online criticism and affected the institution's credibility.
Within brotherhood circles, various reasons are being speculated, including the Diocese's potential disagreement with some members of Zarzuela's team, even though some of them are part of the current council. Another circulating theory suggests the decision might be related to her gender. The elections for the Union of Brotherhoods Council, scheduled for July 8th, have thus commenced amidst controversy and a lack of transparency.
