Moreno indicated that urgent work is being carried out to consolidate the safety of homes affected by the seismic episode in the Vega de Granada, which has already registered two earthquakes of magnitude 4.8 since last Friday, August 14. These consolidation efforts will allow residents to return.
The Andalusian president also explained that damage is being quantified to repair it as soon as possible, in collaboration with the City Council, the Provincial Council, the State Administration, and the Junta de Andalucía.
Moreno acknowledged that earthquakes are unpredictable but committed to educating and informing the Andalusian population on how to act during a tremor. He recalled that experts indicate that the sequence of tremors could continue for one or two weeks as the faults readjust.
He stressed that the province of Granada experiences the most seismic activity in Spain and emphasized the need to better prepare it to minimize the consequences of future, larger earthquakes. He insisted on the importance of education, as running out is the worst thing to do, recalling the case of Lorca.
Finally, Moreno announced a review of protocols and highlighted the anti-seismic construction regulations since 2003, committing to reinforce them to increase safety in the coming years.
