Officers are focusing on fining e-scooter users who break speed limits and ride on pavements. Fines for riding on pedestrian zones or pavements can reach €200, a penalty also applied for using a mobile phone or headphones while riding.
Furthermore, anyone caught riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs faces fines of up to €1,000. These measures are being implemented as part of the new, strict national traffic laws introduced by the DGT for 2026.
The latest regulations mandate helmet use for all riders, set the minimum riding age at 15 years old, and require vehicle registration. Owners must obtain an official identification number, to be displayed on a rear plate, and secure civil liability insurance.
The maximum speed for electric scooters on urban roads is limited to 25 km/h, dropping to 10 km/h in zones shared with pedestrians. From January 2027, only scooters officially certified by the DGT will be permitted on public streets.
A spokesperson for the Local Police stated that this ongoing safety blitz aims to foster safe coexistence among all road users, reminding that "responsible mobility is everyone’s responsibility. Obeying the rules saves lives."
