The project aims to link Alhaurín de la Torre with the industrial estates of the capital, the CTM (Mercantile Transport Center), and the Guadalhorce highway (A-357). It would also include a new station for the C-2 commuter train line in the Tarajal (Málaga) area.
This proposal has been studied within the framework of the ‘Málaga Metrópolis Global’ Forum of Mayors. The mayor emphasized the need for a broad vision to solve mobility problems, including short, medium, and long-term plans, such as planning for the arrival of the Metro.
Villanova stressed that these actions require the involvement of all administrations: city councils, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Central Government, as commuter lines depend on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
The most immediate project will be the completion of the widening of the A-404 road between the Encuentro roundabout and the access to the A-7 highway. The visit of the Minister of Development, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, is expected to oversee the work and study the Vial Distribuidor.
The construction of this road was awarded in 2009 but never began. The plan includes creating a new station for the C-2 line and a park-and-ride facility in the Málaga area, near an existing bridge over the train tracks.
The mayor indicated that it would be only 6 kilometers in a straight line from Alhaurín de la Torre and that the measure would require multiplying the frequencies of the C-2 line, currently underutilized, by ten. The goal is to alleviate traffic on the A-357 and reduce private vehicle use.
The design of the Vial Distribuidor was affected by the project for the North Access to Málaga Airport, but the Junta and the Government reached an agreement. It is estimated that the new road could absorb 30% of traffic, offering an alternative for commutes to industrial estates, the University, or the Clinical Hospital.
Furthermore, the need to study the creation of a Metro station between Alhaurín de la Torre and Churriana is highlighted, as part of the planning for transport to Málaga Airport, the third busiest airport on the peninsula without a Metro connection.
