The town of Linares, renowned as the birthplace of artists such as Natalia de Molina, Raphael, and Belin, also boasts a delightful sweet treat: the chachepó. This dessert, one of the most representative of the province of Jaén, has been recovered and highlighted by Confitería Excelsior, a family-owned pastry shop in the city.
The chachepó earned its nickname “the miners' energy bar” due to its deep connection with Linares' mining history. It served as a snack consumed by workers after their exhausting shifts underground, providing them with the necessary energy to regain strength.
Recently, comedian Santi Rodríguez from Jaén visited the Confitería Excelsior workshop to observe its preparation process firsthand. His appearance on the RTVE program Aquí la Tierra has helped popularize this sweet nationwide, acting as an ambassador for this gastronomic treasure.
The miners' energy bar
With over a century of history, the chachepó originated from the need to utilize basic ingredients like flour, eggs, sugar, and milk, during a time when nothing was wasted. Its artisanal preparation, ensuring no two pieces are identical, and a 24-hour rest in an exquisite syrup, give it a unique texture that combines crispiness with sponginess. The quality of its local ingredients, such as free-range eggs and olive oil, has contributed to it being one of the most awarded sweets in the province.
Among its accolades, the chachepó holds the ‘Degusta Jaén’ seal, certifying its quality at national and European levels. Furthermore, it was recognized as the Best Sweet of Spain 2019 by Cadena SER and received the Best Promotion Award 2019 from the Diputación de Jaén. Since 2018, Confitería Excelsior has driven its national expansion through the project “Chachepó, typical sweet from Linares,” participating in events like FITUR and Expoliva, and joining platforms such as Degusta Jaén and Aroma Jaén. To facilitate its purchase, the confectionery even has a vending machine on Avenida de Andalucía number 2, available 24 hours a day.
Beyond its gastronomic value, the chachepó from Linares demonstrates a strong social commitment. The company collaborates with the NGO Hola Ghana, allocating a portion of its sales to educational projects in Africa, highlighting that this sweet not only delights palates but also contributes to international solidarity causes.
