The agreement, with an initial duration of four years and the possibility of extension, aims at the production, conservation, and reforestation of the Spanish fir in the province of Málaga. The collaboration will focus on the participation of volunteers and groups at risk of social exclusion, thus promoting an action with a dual impact: environmental and social.
A spokesperson for the Provincial Council highlighted that information, education, and environmental awareness programs will be implemented, targeting students and various professional sectors. These activities will be carried out in conjunction with Cruz Roja, which will also be responsible for the production of Spanish fir saplings, from seed treatment to plant maintenance and distribution.
The Málaga Provincial Council, through its provincial network of nurseries, annually supplies around 7,500 trees and plants to municipalities. Last year, 7,000 square meters of vegetation were distributed. The institution manages three nurseries, including one in Yunquera, in Sierra de las Nieves, which operates in collaboration with Cruz Roja and could produce up to 260,000 specimens in the future.
“"Thanks to the Yunquera City Council and the Provincial Council, we have managed to make the Sierra de las Nieves nursery the great center for the generation and supply of Spanish firs to the Junta de Andalucía and, of course, to the province of Málaga."
A Cruz Roja spokesperson emphasized that this agreement goes beyond mere environmental action, considering it an important social initiative. The main objective is to actively involve residents of the Sierra de las Nieves municipalities in caring for the environment, fostering the idea that improved sustainability is a direct result of collective participation.
