The 2022 Andalusian elections granted the Popular Party a historic absolute majority in the community. However, the province of Málaga presented a unique situation: about twenty municipalities where the party failed to be the preferred option for voters. These localities, mostly situated in the interior and the Axarquía region, have traditionally maintained a more diverse electoral behavior, with a significant influence from local or left-wing candidacies.
Among the municipalities that resisted the general trend, Teba stands out, where a left-wing coalition won the polls. Other localities such as Almargen, Fuente de Piedra, or Humilladero also deviated from the majority pattern. In the Guadalteba region, municipalities like El Burgo, Serrato, Cañete la Real, Almargen, and Cuevas del Becerro showed support for the socialist party, while in the Axarquía, El Borge, Almáchar, Benamargosa, and Iznate were prominent.
This electoral landscape underscores the complexity of the province of Málaga. While urban and coastal areas largely favored the Popular Party, the rural interior often maintained loyalty to progressive options or its own political dynamics. Additional examples include Cuevas Bajas, Parauta, Genalguacil, Benadalid, Cuevas de San Marcos, Villanueva de Tapia, Alfarnate, and Alameda, completing the list of localities that in 2022 diverged from the popular majority.
Ahead of the upcoming election on May 17, the behavior of these municipalities will be crucial in assessing whether the leadership of the current president of the Junta de Andalucía consolidates further or if, on the contrary, pockets of political resistance emerge that could limit the Popular Party's advance. The economic situation, the management of the regional government, and debates on public services are central issues that could influence voters' decisions.
Opposition parties seek to strengthen their presence in these localities, aware of their symbolic and strategic value, despite their smaller demographic weight. The results of May 17 in these polling stations will determine whether the 2022 exception was an isolated event or if it represents a deeper political current within the province of Málaga.
