The United States' National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the next fiscal year has included significant allocations for the Spanish military bases of Rota and Morón. This act, which still requires Senate approval after its recent passage in the House of Representatives, outlines authorized appropriations for the Department of Defense for military construction and personnel, presenting record figures with over a trillion dollars globally.
Specifically, the naval base in Rota will receive 236 million dollars (approximately 205 million euros) for several key projects. A substantial portion, over 64 million dollars (around 55 million euros), will be allocated to the acquisition of real estate and military construction for the Navy outside the United States, likely for sailor accommodation areas within the Camp Mitchell project.
Additionally, funds are being extended from previous fiscal years: more than 92 million dollars (nearly 80 million euros) for the EDI: Missile Magazines project, intended for missile storage, and 80 million dollars (69.5 million euros) for the first phase of constructing new fuel tanks, complementing the modernization of fuel depots also to be undertaken by the Spanish Navy.
The Morón Air Base will also benefit from these investments, with the Air Force authorizing over 265 million dollars (230 million euros). These funds will be distributed among military construction projects (156 million dollars), an aircraft parking platform (75 million dollars), and ammunition storage (34 million dollars).
The Navy at Rota has other ongoing projects, including the construction of new hangars for the maintenance of C-5 and C-17 aircraft under project FX74. Furthermore, new facilities are being built for boat storage, port support buildings such as a joint-use harbor master's office, and work on piers, workshops, and helicopter hangars.
These investments demonstrate the continued commitment of the United States to the Rota Base, despite previous criticisms, in a context where Spain is also increasing its expenditure on the base and defense-related companies in the province.
