The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has initiated an emergency project for the replacement and repair of Armco-type pipes on the A-49, within the province of Huelva. This intervention, with a budget of 2.25 million euros (VAT included), aims to improve the road's drainage infrastructure.
As part of these works, the current drainage system will be replaced by a prefabricated concrete frame measuring 2.00 x 2.00 meters, and the affected embankment and pavement will be restored. To ensure the safety of workers and users, the carriageway in the Seville direction will be closed from 8:00 AM on Tuesday, April 7.
Traffic heading towards Seville will be diverted to the opposite carriageway via two new median crossings located at kilometers 55.32 and 56.9. For vehicles traveling towards Huelva, a provisional service road has been adapted to allow connection with the motorway. These traffic disruptions are expected to continue until June 16.
These works are in addition to other recent actions on Huelva's road network. Less than a month ago, María José Rico, the government's sub-delegate in Huelva, highlighted the activation of several emergency contracts totaling over 10.5 million euros to repair damage caused by adverse weather conditions. These interventions complement previously tendered conservation and maintenance agreements, amounting to nearly nine million euros.
Many of these actions have focused on the A-49, with improvements in sections passing through towns such as Chucena, Villalba del Alcor, Hinojos, Bollullos Par del Condado, Villarrasa, Rociana, Niebla, Bonares, San Juan del Puerto, Trigueros, Huelva, Gibraleón, Cartaya, Lepe, Villablanca, and Ayamonte.
In addition to these repairs, the most anticipated project for the A-49 is the construction of a third lane between Huelva and Seville. This project, awarded late last year, represents an investment of 14 million euros and includes the expansion of 3.4 kilometers (between kilometers 74.250 and 77.650) and the improvement of the interchange with the N-435. The work aims to increase the motorway's capacity by widening the platform with a basic third lane in the median and in each direction, as well as expanding the platform outwards on the left carriageway to comply with the distance between consecutive exit ramps and distributor collector roads. This intervention is crucial, as the San Juan del Puerto interchange handles a high volume of traffic, causing congestion at the entrance to the southern roundabout that directly affects the main trunk of the A-49.
