The municipality of Torrox has initiated an ambitious project to enhance its rural road network, spanning over 68 kilometers across various areas. The total projected investment is approximately €200,000 and also includes clearing work on rivers and streams to mitigate potential damage from rainfall.
These interventions will be carried out progressively on approximately twenty rural routes. The primary goal is to facilitate access to both residential areas and agricultural holdings, while simultaneously improving the safety and mobility for regular users of these paths.
The mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, has highlighted the scale of this initiative, describing it as the most extensive intervention to date in the municipality for this matter. Medina has linked these improvements to the strengthening of two key local economic sectors: agriculture and rural tourism.
The first phase of the works, with an estimated duration of eight months, includes actions on roads such as Los Caserones, Manzano, Huit, Montealegre-Palagares, Culebral, Lazo-Baeza, Plano Alto, Manzano Costa, Galera-Palagares, La Rejana, Cajagua, del Pino, Rábita-Conchales, Loma del Negro, Meli-Pastora, Paniagua, La Dehesa, del Puerto, and de El Morche. Additionally, neighborhood roads with significant vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be conditioned.
This initial phase has a budget of €72,600 and will be executed by the company Materiales de Construcción Atencia Escobar El Cámara SL.
The City Council emphasizes that improving this road network will enhance rural mobility and upgrade access conditions to agricultural farms. The Councilor for Agriculture and Environment, Ana Pérez, stressed the importance of maintaining these infrastructures for farm workers and residents in these zones, responding to the needs raised by farmers and locals.
Complementing this first intervention, a second action will focus on reinforcing the surface of 22 sections of rural roads. The council has approved the technical report for this phase, which will require an additional investment of €100,000, targeting areas needing improved transit and maintenance conditions.
The municipal plan also includes riverbed maintenance work. The City Council has initiated the contracting process for clearing rivers and streams, with a budget exceeding €18,000. The aim is to improve the condition of these watercourses and reduce the risk of damage from flash floods during heavy rainfall.
Óscar Medina stated that the objective is to comprehensively address the improvement of rural communications and preventive measures in riverbeds, combining the promotion of economic activity with citizen safety.
