The Por Andalucía coalition has presented in Granada a comprehensive plan to allocate 10% of the health budget to mental health, seeking to reverse the social and health emergency in the province.

The political group Por Andalucía has denounced the critical mental health situation in the province of Granada, attributing the problem to privatization policies and the dismantling of public services implemented by the Popular Party Government. According to the coalition, the Junta de Andalucía is weakening essential public foundations and forcing families to resort to private services, where a psychological session can cost up to 70 euros.
Data presented by the coalition reflects a structural crisis. In Andalucía, 815 suicide deaths were recorded in 2024, a 5.96% increase from the previous year, with Granada leading with the highest provincial rate (1.13). Furthermore, 42.08% of Andalusians have suffered at least one diagnosable mental disorder, but the public system cannot meet demand, with over 19,000 people on waiting lists for mental health care in the community as of June 2024.

"With 19,000 Andalusians on waiting lists and Granada leading the suicide rate, the PP looks the other way. From Por Andalucía, we are clear: mental health is not a class privilege. We will shield FAISEM to ensure social integration, allocate 10% of the health budget to mental health, and legally guarantee psychologists in Primary Care and schools. Going to therapy cannot depend on your bank account. There is hope, and we have a plan to care for life."

The scarcity of resources is a key factor, as Andalucía has only five mental health professionals per 100,000 inhabitants, below the national average (six) and far from the 18 recommended by the European average. It is estimated that more than 18,000 professionals are needed to meet adequate standards, while the Strategic Plan for Mental Health and Addictions (Pesma-A) 2024-2028 remains unapproved.
The Comprehensive Public and Community Mental Health Plan proposed by Por Andalucía aims to halt privatization. Its immediate action axes include an urgent financial injection of 10% of the health budget for mental health, which would allow for massive hiring to bring professional ratios in line with the European average. It also foresees the presence of psychologists in Primary Care, social services, hospitals, and educational centers.
Additionally, the coalition will promote a specific plan to halve waiting times in the SAS, addressing suicide prevention, Eating Disorders (TCA), and gambling addiction. This preventive work would extend to the educational sphere with anti-suicide plans in schools, providing them with economic and material resources and continuous specialized staff. Finally, the aim is to strengthen the public FAISEM network to ensure social integration and alleviate the care burden on Andalusian families.
