The airport management company, Aena, has put out to tender the runway regeneration works at Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, a project valued at 19.7 million euros. These works, deemed critical for operational safety, will necessitate the complete closure of the runway to air traffic for 21 consecutive days in May 2027.
The closure period is scheduled, in principle, from 2:15 AM on May 5, 2027, until 6:30 AM on May 27, 2027. During these three weeks, flights to or from Granada will be diverted to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which will serve as the alternative.
Aena has stated that this decision was communicated in advance to airlines and companies operating at the Granada airport to facilitate flight rescheduling and activity reorganization. The works are part of DORA III, the airport operator's new investment plan, which will allocate 9.991 million euros across its entire network between 2027 and 2031.
“"This is a complex engineering project, meticulously planned, as it affects a critical area in terms of operational safety."
The scope of work includes removing the current pavement and applying a new 2.5-centimeter thick layer on the runway and its margins, as well as superficial regeneration of the taxiways. Additionally, rigid pavement at the runway thresholds will be demolished and rebuilt, the runway strip will be leveled, a new air taxiway for helicopters will be enabled, and hydroseeding will be applied in critical areas of radio aids.
Furthermore, the entire aeronautical lighting system on the surface of the aircraft movement area and approach will be replaced, incorporating LED technology for greater energy efficiency. The complexity of the works has led Aena to plan their execution in several phases, prioritizing safety and minimizing disruption to normal airport operations, with the bulk of the work taking place during nighttime hours.
