The mayor of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, accompanied by the municipal delegate for Traffic and Mobility, met with union representatives of the urban bus service workers. The meeting addressed the working conditions of the staff and the future management of public transport in the town.
During the meeting, the union representation showed understanding of the arguments presented by the local Government regarding the impossibility of municipalizing the service in the short term. The Council indicated that the state of the fleet and facilities requires significant investments, detailing that the average age of the buses exceeds 14 years, with some units in circulation since 2003 having accumulated over two million kilometers. According to the feasibility study, the complete fleet renewal is estimated to take approximately ten years.
“"Although the municipalization of the service remains on the political agenda, the current economic situation of the City Council prevents its immediate implementation due to other personnel priorities."
The mayor also criticized the opposition's use of this issue, considering it a tool to undermine the local Executive's management. Regarding the design of the new concession contract, the municipal Government has committed to studying the labor improvements proposed by the staff, always subject to budgetary availability.
Finally, the mayor thanked the union representatives for their receptiveness and reaffirmed the objective of improving both workers' conditions and the quality of the service provided to citizens.
