The president of the Junta de Andalucía has expressed concern over the state of relations between Spain and the United States, deeming them "at the worst point" in the recent history of the country. This situation, according to his statements, is detrimental due to the commercial ties and traditional alliance between both nations.
During his participation in an informative forum, the regional leader emphasized the need to maintain "fluid relations" with the United States, regardless of the current administration. He also warned about the "consequences" of the stance adopted by the Spanish Government with the US administration.
“"If any of the bases with American presence located in Andalusia were to close tomorrow, it would be a tragedy for those regions because they have a direct impact on progress and well-being."
The Andalusian president advocated for the continuation of existing agreements, stating that military collaboration and cooperation are "fundamental for our strategic interests" and that the impact of these bases extends beyond economic considerations. In his view, the Spanish Government is demonstrating an "erratic" foreign policy with "swings."
Regarding the political agreement on Gibraltar, which aims to eliminate the fence and guarantee free movement, the regional leader expressed surprise at the lack of debate in the Cortes Generales, unlike what will happen in the United Kingdom. He stressed the importance of Andalusia having information to provide essential services, such as healthcare, to the citizens of Gibraltar.
Finally, he highlighted that the agreement is positive for the more than 10,000 Spanish workers who cross the border daily. However, he insisted that Gibraltar "cannot be a tax haven" and that it is crucial to harmonize taxation, both for Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar, to prevent the physical border from being removed while the fiscal one remains.
