The 2026-2027 academic year will include, for the second consecutive year, the Democratic Memory educational programs designed by the Diputación for Secondary and Baccalaureate students in the province of Cádiz. The final resolution of this call, promoted by the Historical and Democratic Memory Service, has been published on the provincial institution's notice board.
The initiative will reach 2,700 students from 18 municipalities in Cádiz, including 4th-year Secondary students from Chipiona. The content will be delivered through in-class workshops, visits to the Houses of Memory in Jimena de la Frontera and Alcalá del Valle, and new memorial interest routes.
Diputación will soon tender the methodology and didactics for these proposals. New additions include two memorial routes: one in Cádiz capital narrating the city's occupation in July 1936, and another in Alcalá de los Gazules detailing the consequences of the Civil War and the maquis resistance pockets.
The workshops will cover topics such as hate speech, repression against women, mass graves, and memory sites in the province. The aim is to foster critical awareness among students and convey messages of human rights defense, delving into subjects often briefly explained in current study plans.
Visits to the Houses of Memory in Jimena and Alcalá del Valle will continue, serving as key examples in promoting democratic values and studying the repression following the 1936 coup d'état and the subsequent Franco dictatorship.
