Between January and March 2026, the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex in Casares processed 84,112 tons of Urban Solid Waste (USW). This figure represents a 9% rise compared to the same period last year, when 77,358 tons were managed. The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental highlighted the “positive evolution” of selective collection, particularly for light packaging and paper-cardboard.
Selective collection of light packaging also showed growth, reaching 3,992 tons in the first quarter of 2026, up from 3,819 in 2025, marking a 5% increase. This progress was observed across most municipalities in the region, reinforcing citizen commitment to waste separation.
Paper and cardboard demonstrated the best performance, with 3,219 tons collected in the first three months of 2026, a 14% increase over the 2,818 tons from the first quarter of 2025. This year-on-year rise in most municipalities confirms a progressive improvement in blue bin collection.
However, glass collection experienced a slight decrease of 5.8%, falling from 3,284 tons in 2025 to 3,093 in 2026. Despite this overall decline, some municipalities achieved significant increases that partially offset the irregular trend for this fraction. The supramunicipal institution emphasizes the importance of public awareness and correct source separation to meet European circularity targets for waste.
