For those seeking a different plan, the Strait bunkers route proposes a journey through military constructions that, while part of the landscape, also show significant neglect. This itinerary extends through enclaves near Algeciras and Tarifa, integrating into the defensive system known as the Wall of the Strait, a network of over 130 kilometers built during the Franco regime.
The recommended starting point is the Centenario Park, in Punta de San García. This area was home to bunker 310, a fort that recently collapsed, highlighting the deterioration of these structures. From here, coastal paths allow hikers to begin their walk and observe how these constructions were built on unstable terrain, such as the coastal flysch.
The path continues towards the Punta Carnero Lighthouse, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Algeciras and the Strait. Along the way, it is possible to find remnants of other bunkers, many of them semi-buried or deteriorated, integrated into the natural environment. For the more adventurous, the route can extend to Tarifa, where the defensive system continues with more bunkers in areas like Punta Paloma or Valdevaqueros.
This proposal is ideal for those who want more than just a simple walk, offering an experience that merges history, nature, and the sea, exploring little-known corners of Campo de Gibraltar.
