The ship Astral, operated by the organization Open Arms, will arrive in Cadiz this Friday. Its stopover is part of the 'Rumbo a Cuba' campaign, promoted by various social groups and organizations to protest the economic blockade on the Caribbean island and to support a humanitarian project in Havana.
The vessel departed from the port of Barcelona on May 13th and, after stopping in several Spanish cities for informational and protest events, will continue its journey towards Cuba.
According to the organizing entities, the campaign has a dual objective: firstly, to raise awareness about the consequences of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba; and secondly, to support the installation of photovoltaic panels at the Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital in Havana to improve its energy self-sufficiency amidst the island's electricity supply problems.
During the Astral's stay in Cadiz, several public events will take place. On Friday, at 10:00 AM, there will be a reception for the vessel at the port entrance, in Plaza de Sevilla. Subsequently, at 11:00 AM, a press conference will be held featuring Esther Camps, mission chief of Open Arms, and Miguel Urbán, a member of the 'Rumbo a Cuba' project organization.
On Saturday, May 23rd, at 7:00 PM, a protest against the blockade on Cuba will be held in the Plaza del Gran Teatro Falla, featuring representatives from the organizing entities and local artistic performances.
The participating organizations emphasize that the campaign aims to draw attention to the humanitarian consequences of economic blockades and the need for international solidarity actions. Collaborating in the organization of activities in Cadiz are groups such as Abrir Brecha, Adelante Andalucía, Amal Esperanza, Anticapitalistas, Asociación Pro Derechos Humanos de Andalucía, Ecologistas en Acción, Izquierda Unida, Provincia de Cádiz por Palestina, Partido Comunista de Andalucía, and the USTEA union.
The 'Rumbo a Cuba' campaign is led by Open Arms, an organization known for its humanitarian and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and other international scenarios.
