Informative panels about the history of La Barrosa beach and defensive towers in Chiclana.

The ‘Vestigium’ project has introduced new information panels in Chiclana, detailing the rich history of the coastline, including La Barrosa beach and defensive towers.

The mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, and the delegate for Beaches, Ana González, attended the presentation of the ‘Vestigium’ project in Chiclana. The project includes the unveiling of informative panels on the history of La Barrosa beach. They were accompanied by Milagros Alzaga, head of the Underwater Archaeology Centre of the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage (IAPH), and Marta Sameño, Director of Research and Transfer at IAPH. They visited the Torre del Puerco and Torre Bermeja.
Mayor Román highlighted that the IAPH project serves to remember the significance of the historical heritage of the Cádiz coast, an area that witnessed battles like Trafalgar and the Battle of La Barrosa, and is now a prominent tourist destination. He noted that visitors can enrich their experience by learning about the history alongside the natural spaces.
Milagros Alzaga emphasized that the ‘Vestigium’ Project, funded by European and Junta de Andalucía funds, focused a significant part of its year-and-a-half research on Chiclana's coastline. The panels showcase findings such as Pleistocene shell middens and 16th-century watchtowers.
The shipwreck of the vessel ‘Soberbio’ in 1752 off the coast of Chiclana was mentioned, which led to the establishment of a salvage camp. The head of the Underwater Archaeology Centre explained that this event prompted the creation of what is considered the first beach bar in Andalusia. The panels feature QR codes for audio descriptions and a video about the history of La Barrosa.
