The Port of Almería is gearing up for its major operational leap in 2027 with the extension of the Pechina pier, a key project set to boost commercial traffic and the provincial economy.

The expansion of the Pechina pier at the Port of Almería is shaping up to be the major operational undertaking for the year 2027. This project, currently in the adjudication phase, has the financial backing of Puertos del Estado (State Ports) and is integrated into the Business Plan of the Port Authority of Almería (APA).
This initiative is a national priority, aiming to enhance the province's logistical and economic strength. The pier extension will provide the port with greater operational capacity, draft, and berthing space for large-tonnage vessels, responding to the significant projected increase in merchandise traffic.
The APA, with sound finances that closed 2025 with zero debt and 13 million euros in profit, is driving this expansion to accommodate an estimated 75% growth in tonnage moved by 2030, surpassing the current 6 million tons, with a particular focus on gypsum transport.
The overall investment planned until 2030 amounts to 86 million euros, focusing not only on traditional port infrastructure but also on environmental sustainability and efficiency. Puertos del Estado will allocate over 1.5 billion euros in 2027, with 20% directed towards green initiatives, a trend that Almería is leading with pioneering decarbonization and energy innovation projects.
The project includes technological advancements for clean operations, such as a new substation for pier electrification and the OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system to connect docked ships to the electrical grid. The installation of photovoltaic panels at Ribera I and improvements to the Maritime Station's energy efficiency are also planned.
Concurrently, the port is strengthening its openness to the public with the execution of four more hectares of the port-city project in the Muelle de Levante and Las Almadrabillas, pending favorable report from the Council of Ministers. These initiatives aim to integrate maritime spaces for the enjoyment of Almería's residents.
The horizon of 2027 paints a picture of a modern, competitive Port of Almería, fully integrated into the city's social and economic fabric, symbolizing a forward-looking vision that combines economic efficiency, environmental respect, and public enjoyment.
