Repair works to fix a broken sewage collector in the Monachil River, which caused a spill after February rains, are now in progress.

The Monachil River is once again in the spotlight in Granada due to an incident dating back to the heavy rains of February. The rupture of a sewage collector led to a spill into the riverbed, prompting the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG) to intervene to assess the damage and coordinate the infrastructure's repair.
The Confederation has confirmed that the works to repair the collector are already underway, following weeks of technical and administrative procedures. The objective is to restore the installation's normal functioning and prevent similar incidents in the future.
CHG technicians visited the Monachil River on July 24 to inspect the spill, collect water samples, and determine the potential impact on water quality and the public hydraulic domain. These actions will help establish responsibilities and initiate the corresponding administrative proceedings.
The Confederation has maintained technical coordination with the City Council to find the most suitable solution for restoring the damaged collector. The rupture occurred in a challenging context, as extraordinary rains earlier in the year caused damage in various parts of the basin, necessitating emergency actions.
In addition to collector repair, the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation is carrying out works in the same river section to fix flood damage, restore hydraulic conditions, and improve the river's environmental state. These efforts aim to return normalcy to one of the most recognizable riverbeds in the metropolitan area of Granada.
The CHG has clarified the division of responsibilities: local entities manage sewage and public sanitation networks, while the Confederation monitors discharges and protects the public hydraulic domain. Resolving incidents like this requires coordinated action from both administrations to protect the river and prevent future spills.
