Antonio Sanz, Minister of Presidency, Health, and Emergencies for the Junta de Andalucía, provided an update on the consequences of the magnitude 5 earthquake with its epicenter in Alhendín. Severe structural and material damage has been ruled out, with health incidents limited to anxiety attacks and minor injuries from falls. Reported material damage includes issues with formwork, false ceilings, cornices, and glass.
Experts confirm the likelihood of aftershocks of lesser intensity in the coming hours and days, leading to the continued activation of the seismic risk advisory committee. In La Zubia, damage to municipal buildings and homes is being assessed; in Gójar, the church and town hall are being inspected; and in Granada capital, damage is concentrated in El Zaidín.
The Junta de Andalucía noted that the seismic series shows similarities to the 2021 swarm, with no clear decrease in aftershocks or released energy, suggesting the possibility of further seismic activity.
Raúl Pérez López, a representative from IGME-CSIC, and Inmaculada Serrano, director of the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics, explained that the seismic activity began on August 13th with a magnitude 3.1 earthquake, followed by a 3.6, and the main 5.0 event at 1:04 AM on Saturday.
To date, the Andalusian seismic network has recorded approximately 200 movements, most of which were not felt by the population. The IGN has announced the deployment of technical personnel to install new sensors and enhance the study of the phenomenon.
Specialists anticipate that movements of magnitude 3 or 4 may continue in the coming hours or days, based on the behavior of previous seismic series, although the exact timing and magnitude of future earthquakes cannot be predicted.
