The state regulations for personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), such as electric scooters, come into effect on October 1st, adding to the specific regulations already in place in the municipality of Mijas. The aim is to clarify user obligations to ensure safe circulation and road coexistence.
Among the main state-level novelties are the mandatory use of helmets for PMV riders, as well as a minimum age of 15 years, consistent with that already established in Mijas. Users must signal maneuvers with their arm and, during the night or in low visibility conditions, use luminous or reflective elements, such as a vest, to be visible from 150 meters. The obligation regarding PMV lighting will apply from October 1st, 2027.
These new provisions are in addition to the current municipal rules in Mijas, which prohibit riding on sidewalks and pedestrian areas, limit the use of mobile devices, and require compliance with alcohol and drug restrictions. The municipal ordinance prioritizes pedestrian safety, requiring a one-meter distance or dismounting in shared areas.
Additionally, PMVs must comply with state obligations for registration in the corresponding registry and the contracting of mandatory civil liability insurance, according to the established transitional periods for these vehicles.
Mijas Local Police will continue with informational efforts to facilitate user adaptation to these regulations, reminding that scooters are vehicles and their use entails responsibilities to ensure safety and coexistence on public roads.
