PP aims to consolidate its advance in Maracena against PSOE in Andalusian elections

The town of Maracena, traditionally socialist, saw the PP win in 2022, signaling a potential shift in political trends.

The upcoming Andalusian elections in Maracena will be crucial to observe if the Popular Party can maintain the lead gained in 2022, challenging the historical dominance of the PSOE in this municipality.

Voters in Granada are preparing to elect their representatives to the Andalusian Parliament. Although regional results are not directly extrapolable to municipal ones, they do offer clues about future citizen preferences. A clear example is Maracena, a socialist stronghold in the province that experienced a significant shift in the 2022 regional elections.
In 2022, the Popular Party achieved a historic victory in Maracena, securing 43.1% of the votes and surpassing the PSOE by over a thousand ballots, which garnered 27.1%. This result sharply contrasted with the town's usual trend. A year later, in the 2023 local elections, the PP was just one seat shy of matching the socialists, suggesting a change in the local political landscape.
The current situation differs drastically from that of 2018, when the PSOE was the most voted force with 27.1%, while the PP was in fourth position with 15.3%. Throughout the 21st century, the PSOE had maintained hegemony in Maracena, sometimes exceeding 50% of the votes. In 2012, the PP was close to victory with 35.9% against the PSOE's 40.9%, but it was not until 2022 that they managed to unseat the socialists.
These historical data show that, traditionally, the question in Maracena was not who would win, but who would come in second, given the PSOE's consolidated position. However, the 2022 and 2023 results have opened a new scenario, where the PP aims to consolidate its presence and, potentially, win the City Council in future electoral contests.
