Citizens of Granada are called to the polls on May 17 to elect their representatives to the Andalusian Parliament. The Popular Party faces the challenge of maintaining the majority it secured in the province in 2022, a success built on strong local victories, such as in Las Gabias, where it garnered 42.5% of the votes.
With a population exceeding 23,000 inhabitants and an electoral roll of over 16,000 voters, this metropolitan municipality is considered a strategic objective. In the previous elections, the Popular Party achieved a notable victory, leaving the PSOE as the second force with 22.1% of the votes, and Vox in third place with 18%, demonstrating a significant gap between the first and second parties.
The Popular Party's victory in Las Gabias was not a surprise after the provincial count, but it contrasts with the scenario of the 2018 regional elections. On that occasion, the PSOE emerged victorious, and the Popular Party came in third, with a difference of just 200 votes from the PSOE and Ciudadanos, a party that is not presenting a list in the current election.
In 2018, the PSOE obtained 1,893 votes (22.2%), Ciudadanos 1,857 votes (21.8%), and the Popular Party 1,687 votes (19.8%). The socialist victory was narrow, with Adelante Andalucía and Vox securing 15.8% and 13.1% respectively. In 2015, the PSOE had achieved a more comfortable victory with 32.6% of the votes, compared to 25.2% for the Popular Party, while Podemos emerged as the third force with 17.2%.
Historically, Las Gabias has reflected a two-party system, with the PSOE and the Popular Party concentrating the majority of votes. In 2012, both parties registered a technical tie, with 41.5% for the Popular Party and 41.1% for the PSOE, a difference of just 30 votes. Izquierda Unida was the third force with 8.6%. Four years earlier, in 2008, the PSOE nearly reached 50% of the votes, surpassing the Popular Party (40.6%) and Izquierda Unida (6.5%).
The socialists had an even better result in 2004, when 57.1% of Las Gabias voters placed their trust in the party, establishing a lead similar to what the Popular Party would achieve almost two decades later. In that year, the Popular Party obtained a third of the votes, enough to distance itself from Izquierda Unida, which fell below 5%.
