The work is being carried out in the square of Miguel Hernández street, near the original location of the cistern. The intervention has involved raising the facade of this historic structure, characterized by a niche with a semicircular arch and a pediment.
With this project, Cúllar Vega now has all three cisterns that coexisted during the 20th century standing again. The heritage recovery plan began with the restoration of the Aljibe de la Plaza de la Constitución (2021/2022), continued with the reconstruction of the Aljibe Nuevo (2022), and now concludes with the Aljibe Viejo.
“"It is a small intervention in size, but with great significance for Cúllar Vega. We are recovering a piece of our history that many people in our town still remember perfectly and hold in their memory. This cistern, the oldest in the town and the one that gives its name to one of our nearby streets, is part of our identity."
Mayor Jorge Sánchez highlighted the importance of the intervention, which is part of the local government's overall strategy to protect the municipality's symbols. "We continue to work decisively in the improvement, conservation, and recovery of our historical-artistic heritage. Our goal is to make Cúllar Vega a more beautiful town every day, proud of its roots and more livable for our residents," he announced.
The City Council has publicly congratulated the municipal workers, recognizing the detail and care put into the work. The contribution of Manuel, the town hall's master stonemason, who was responsible for much of the meticulous architectural reconstruction work, has been particularly valued.
