The Cúllar Vega City Council has announced it will file objections to the VAU-5 highway project, a key infrastructure for mobility in the southern part of the Granada Metropolitan Area. The municipality's main demand is that the highway include a direct connection node towards Cúllar Vega, which is not included in the current preliminary draft. The goal is to prevent local traffic from collapsing other existing or planned connection nodes in nearby towns such as Las Gabias or the Híjar area.
Mayor Jorge Sánchez explained that his primary objection focuses on the road having a connection node at the level of the GR-3304, the town's main road. They will also request that the VAU-5 pass at the same level at its intersection with the GR-3304, instead of at a different level as proposed in the preliminary draft, which would facilitate the connection and avoid an infrastructure with "pillars" they consider inconsistent with a "green corridor".
The preliminary draft, open for objections until July 21, proposes an unchangeable common route from the Second Ring Road in Las Gabias to Churriana, crossing Cúllar Vega and the Dílar river. The current plan includes connections at the GR-3311 for Las Gabias and Híjar, and a junction 3 after crossing the Dílar river to connect with the GR-3303.
Sánchez recalled that in 2022, when the Regional Government began studying the preliminary draft, the Council had already requested an exit for its locality, being told it was not possible due to regulations, as exits already existed in Las Gabias and Churriana. Now, with the project in public information, the municipality insists on its request.
The mayor also proposes utilizing existing infrastructure, such as Cristóbal Colón and San Rafael avenues, adapting them and doubling the lanes between Churriana de la Vega and Armilla, and acting on Parque Albán to resolve a traffic "bottleneck" there. He argues that a conventional road, rather than a highway, could be sufficient and save costs, connecting to the GR-30 in Armilla and serving Las Gabias and Cúllar Vega.
Sánchez considers the common section of the VAU-5 "mandatory" to alleviate mobility issues, especially in Las Gabias, and given the future traffic interruptions from the Metro. Regarding the outer ring road of Cúllar Vega, he reiterated the request for collaboration from the Provincial Council of Granada to develop an informative study that would allow for the doubling of the GR-3304 and provide more fluidity to the provincial road.
