The fire, which broke out last Saturday around 1:00 PM near the Béznar reservoir, mobilized the Andalusian Forest Fire Extinction Service personnel throughout the night. Initial estimates indicate that approximately 200 hectares have been burned.
The fire, declared 'stabilized' around 8:00 PM, required the intervention of 19 aerial resources, three heavy extinction vehicles, and 125 forest firefighters. The significant smoke column generated by the flames was visible from the highway to the Costa Tropical, causing traffic delays.
As a preventive measure, a hundred people from a nearby camp were evacuated. The Rules and Béznar reservoirs were also evacuated to facilitate aerial operations, and two individuals were rescued from a nearby farmhouse.
The regional government activated emergency level 1 by sending an Es-Alert message to mobile phones of residents in the affected area, urging them to shelter in place. Subsequently, the first vice-president of the Andalusian government, Antonio Sanz, reported the improvement of the situation and the return to the pre-emergency phase, allowing the evacuated residents to return.
The GR-3204 road, which was preventively closed between kilometers 7.500 and 9, was reopened on Sunday morning, although drivers are advised to proceed with caution due to ongoing extinction efforts. The N-323a road in Lecrín also has minor impact and caution is advised.
During the night, a reactivation of the fire due to strong winds caused a new closure of the road connecting Pinos del Valle with the Béznar dam. The Civil Guard and civil protection from Lanjarón intervened to close the road. Later, the wind subsided, allowing the road to be reopened and favoring the extinction efforts by the deployed Infoca Plan and Granada Firefighters.
