The Early Christian Basilica of Coracho, an archaeological site in Lucena, now features a new attraction: a permanent mosaic exhibition. This project, promoted by the Lucena City Council, has transformed the site into a space for artistic creation and heritage engagement over eight weeks.
A total of 40 individuals, comprising 30 adults and 10 children, participated in creating the pieces, which are inspired by the history and significance of the basilica itself. The initiative combined artistic training, heritage knowledge, and citizen participation, offering a novel way to connect with this archaeological space.
The final result includes seven large-format panels and an eighth piece created by the participating children. In total, approximately 12,000 tesserae made from ceramic, stone, marble, and glass were used, meticulously placed by hand to construct a visual narrative linked to the Basilica of Coracho.
During the presentation, the transversal nature of the project was highlighted, involving collaboration from various municipal departments and the active participation of those involved. The mayor of Lucena, Aurelio Fernández, along with the Councilor for Historical-Artistic Heritage, Charo Valverde, and project promoter Rocío Florido, emphasized the human element and the opportunity for residents to embrace their heritage through artistic creation.
Aurelio Fernández expressed gratitude for the work carried out by Estudio Musivaria and the involvement of all participants, stressing the importance of continuously linking the Basilica of Coracho with cultural and citizen participation activities to enhance its visibility.
The event concluded with the presentation of participation certificates and the unveiling of the mosaic ensemble, which will remain permanently installed for visitors to admire.
