The Green Party has voiced its concern over the Sierra Morena Rally's starting ceremony in Córdoba's city center, labeling it an 'aberration' and criticizing the municipal government's handling of the event.
The environmental group has expressed its displeasure with the event being held for the second consecutive year, considering it an “assault on all regulations governing vehicle traffic and urban center protection.” According to the party, this situation demonstrates that the Popular Party Government “has surrendered public space for spectacle and private business without the slightest respect for citizens.”
“
"The situation suffered during the afternoon and night of yesterday, April 16, in Plaza de las Tendillas and all the streets of the city center, as a consequence of the Sierra Morena Rally's starting ceremony, is considered by the Green Party to be very worrying because it reflects the misguided city model that the municipal government of the Popular Party is promoting."
The Green Party points out that the inclusion of a circuit in pedestrian areas such as Las Tendillas, Capitulares, or Cruz Conde, in addition to restricted access streets like Alfaros and Claudio Marcelo, seems to be consolidating. This led to Córdoba's center being blocked, with no bus service and difficult access for residents and businesses, enduring the deafening noise and gas emissions from the convoy of cars, as well as high-volume public address systems installed in Las Tendillas.
“
"For many years, it has taken effort from citizens and various municipal governments to advance in pedestrianizing streets and controlling road traffic in the city center, only for this area to now be chosen as an exhibition for competition vehicles. There are many other spaces in Córdoba to hold the Rally's start without violating municipal regulations or harming residents and normal activity in this area of the city."
Another party spokesperson has denounced that the municipal government “is demonstrating through its actions its lack of real interest in protecting and improving the city and the lives of its inhabitants.” They criticized the lack of seriousness in declaring and complying with low-emission zones, promoting mass events in unsuitable areas, and tolerating repeated violations of noise ordinances, all “for the benefit of private interests and to the detriment of citizens.”
Therefore, the Green Party has urged the municipal government not to authorize the Sierra Morena Rally's starting ceremony or the passage of vehicles through Córdoba's city center in future editions, suggesting the search for more suitable locations for these events.
