The Sierra de Cádiz will host one of its most emblematic festivities: the Moors and Christians Festival of Benamahoma. This small town, with around 500 inhabitants, is situated in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and celebrates this festival, of Andalusian Tourist Interest, in honor of San Antonio de Padua.
The Grazalema City Council has released the full program of events that will take place from Monday, July 27, to August 3. The program includes not only the events but also articles about the history of Benamahoma.
The festival will feature a varied agenda including sports competitions, bullfighting events, musical performances, traditional parades, and the reenactments of the battles between Moors and Christians. These confrontations between factions generate great interest due to the spectacular costumes and dialogues that evoke the past.
The program includes events such as semifinals and finals of padel and futsal tournaments, matches between married and single men, the inauguration of the 'El Nacimiento' beach bar, and the opening of the Municipal Booth with musical performances and DJs. There will also be a meal for the elderly, a parade of Queens, the Festival Proclamation, and the coronation of the Moorish Queen and Christian Queen.
The main days of the festival, August 1 and 2, will be marked by dawn parades, traditional children's and adult Moors and Christians battles, sardine feasts, concerts, DJ sets, children's bull runs, and bullfighting events with calf releases. The nights will be enlivened with popular dances and performances by orchestras and bands.
On August 3, the final day, there will be a water slide, musical performances, a street parade, a charlotada (amateur bullfight) in the Plaza de Toros with prizes for the best costume and best bullfight move, trophy presentations, and the final firework display, followed by popular dances.
