Spain has once again positioned itself at the forefront of European heritage excellence, securing five awards in the 2026 European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards. These accolades, considered the most significant in the sector across the continent, were announced by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, highlighting 30 initiatives from 18 countries among 261 applications.
Among the awarded projects, the FENIX initiative, originating from the Province of Seville, has been distinguished in the Research category. This Sevillian project is notable for its use of artificial intelligence and new technologies to optimize the prevention and management of fires and other natural disasters that could affect cultural heritage.
Other Spanish recognitions include the restoration of the dome of the Church of Escuelas Pías in Valencia and the rehabilitation of the Salinas de La Concepción in Menorca, both in the Conservation and Adaptation to New Uses category. The HIMASS International Summer School on Traditional Architecture, a collaboration between Italy and Spain, was awarded in Education, Training and Skills. Finally, the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation, based in Madrid, was named Heritage Champion for its work in digitizing cultural works and spaces.
“"These awards reflect the extraordinary power of heritage to inspire, connect and transform, particularly highlighting the role of innovation and sustainability in the awarded projects."
The public has the opportunity to participate in choosing the Public Choice Award 2026, endowed with 10,000 euros, through online voting until May 12. The awards ceremony will take place on May 28 at the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia, Cyprus, as part of the 2026 European Cultural Heritage Summit.
