This project, considered the main heritage initiative for the temple next year, will include the debut of a large carpet, valued at over 200,000 euros, which will be manufactured by the Real Fábrica de Tapices (Royal Tapestry Factory). The contract for its production has already been signed between the Cathedral Chapter and the factory's management.
The renovation of the main altar, which houses the largest altarpiece in Christendom, will focus on renewing the floor, stone, and the distinctive Renaissance grille. Although the altarpiece was restored a decade ago, the new actions aim for a comprehensive overhaul of the space.
“"One of the main projects contemplated by the Cathedral Chapter for the next year concerns the main altar."
The design of the carpet, which will cover an area of 127 square meters, adapts to the complex layout of the sacred enclosure, with a rectangular base that narrows in the altar table area and continues up the stairs. Its background will be burgundy, with a perimeter in ochre tones and the Cathedral Chapter's coat of arms at the base. The main objective is for the carpet not to overshadow the grandeur of the altarpiece.
The carpet will be made using Turkish knots, an artisanal technique involving 24,000 knots per square meter, requiring a week of work for each square meter, with an estimated cost of 1,200 euros per square meter. Spanish merino wool will be used for the knots, jute for the weft, and cotton for the warp, with the dyeing process handled by the Tapestry Factory.
It is estimated that the carpet will be finished by October 2027, although the final delivery date will depend on the completion of the main altar renovation. Previously, the restoration of the Jubilee Altar, a significant silver ensemble, is expected to be completed by the novena of the Virgen de los Reyes in August.
