RCD Espanyol has confirmed the hiring of Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, known as Monchi, to lead its sports department, aiming to strengthen the club's structure with an internationally recognized executive.

Following their recent defeat against Sevilla FC, RCD Espanyol has made a significant move in the transfer market by announcing Monchi as their new sporting general manager. This appointment seeks to bolster the Catalan team's sports structure with one of the most recognized and prestigious executives in European football.
The executive from San Fernando thus begins his fourth professional venture in management, after successful stints at Sevilla FC, AS Roma, and Aston Villa, a club he left last September. His arrival at Espanyol comes at a crucial time for the club, which has yet to determine its league status for the upcoming season.
Although rumors of his signing had been circulating for a week, the news has surprised Sevilla FC fans, who had hoped for the return of one of the most influential figures in the club's history. Speculation about a change in the Sevillian team's Board of Directors fueled the idea of a new era for Monchi at Nervión, but these theories have been dispelled by Espanyol's official announcement.

"Monchi's incorporation strengthens RCD Espanyol's sports structure with one of the most recognized and prestigious executives in European football."

an RCD Espanyol spokesperson
With a distinguished career in international football, Monchi began as Sevilla FC's sporting director in July 2000, establishing himself as a key figure in sports management. During his two spells at the Andalusian club, he played a decisive role in securing 11 titles between 2006 and 2023, including seven UEFA Europa League trophies, two Copa del Rey titles, one UEFA Super Cup, and one Spanish Super Cup.
Subsequently, he continued his career at AS Roma and Aston Villa FC, where he consolidated a competitive project that has achieved European positions and regularly participated in continental competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
