The reappearance of Morante de la Puebla at the Sevilla April Fair has been one of the most discussed events in the bullfighting world. After announcing his retirement in Madrid on October 12, the Sevillian bullfighter stepped back into the Maestranza arena without having previously fought in any other ring, a decision that surprised many.
“"Morante without bullfighting does not understand his existence; it is not only a spiritual need, it is a mental need."
According to a seasoned bullfighting chronicler's analysis, bullfighting represents an existential necessity for the matador, a duality between salvation and condemnation. This profound connection to his profession would explain his sometimes impulsive decisions, such as his unannounced return to the bullrings.
The performance on April 16 was described by specialists as historic, generating a massive and enthusiastic public response. However, the fair was also marked by an incident on April 20, when Morante suffered a goring during the fight with his last bull. Although initially not appearing serious, the subsequent diagnosis confirmed a “very grave” wound with rectal wall perforation.
This year's April Fair has been deemed “absolutely memorable” by chroniclers, highlighting the artistic dimension of Morante's performances. Despite the quality of his display, the decision not to open the Puerta del Príncipe on April 16 sparked controversy, dividing fans and professionals over the application of bullfighting regulations in exceptional cases.
