The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has confirmed the presence of listeria bacteria in smoked salmon, prompting an urgent warning to consumers. Initially, the alert focused on the Skandia brand, but it has since been expanded to include Gourmet and Carrefour products.
The affected salmon comes from batch number 361214, with expiry dates ranging between April 9 and April 13, 2026. Authorities have urged the public not to consume this product under any circumstances and to return it to the point of sale or dispose of it immediately to prevent health risks.
Anyone who has already consumed the salmon and develops symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea is advised to seek urgent medical attention, as these may be signs of listeriosis, a potentially fatal infection.
Listeriosis can be particularly dangerous if it spreads to the bloodstream or nervous system, posing a significant risk to pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Furthermore, warnings have been issued about the risk of cross-contamination in kitchens, emphasizing the importance of strict hygiene measures when handling food.
The contaminated batch was identified through Spain’s rapid food safety alert system, with regional authorities in Andalucía playing a crucial role in pinpointing the issue.
