The La Rinconada City Council is hopeful of securing a direct link to the Seville Metro via the currently under-construction Northern Line 3. The connection would be established through a metropolitan interchange proposed by the Ándalus association, combining the Metro and Commuter Rail lines.
Both the central government and the Andalusian Regional Government have initiated technical studies to assess the feasibility of this interchange in El Higuerón. The initiative aims to leverage the Metro Line 3 construction works to create a convergence point for the Metro and Seville's four Commuter Rail lines (C1, C2, C3, and C5).
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, confirmed the commencement of these technical studies in collaboration with the Regional Government during a Senate session. Meanwhile, the Regional Government's Ministry of Public Works, led by Mario Muñoz Atanet, is also analyzing the proposal.
The Ministry of Public Works requested a meeting with the Ministry of Transport, held in late February 2026, where a joint study of the proposal was agreed upon. The Regional Government committed to evaluating the socio-economic feasibility using demand data from the Metropolitan Transport Plan, while the Ministry will analyze the technical feasibility and provide updated Commuter Rail line demand data.
La Rinconada City Council, headed by Javier Fernández, views this interchange as a "Metro stop for La Rinconada," according to Mobility and Environment delegate José Manuel Romero Campos. This connection would allow residents to use the Commuter Rail and link to Metro Line 3, promoting public transport use and reducing private vehicle dependency.
Seville's Northern Metro Line 3 is expected to be completed by 2030. The proposed interchange would connect Commuter Rail lines C1, C2, C5, and C3, enhancing mobility for thousands of users and expanding access to quality public transport across various metropolitan areas.
The Ándalus association, chaired by Antonio Alcántara, welcomes the study of its initiative and is seeking support to integrate the interchange into Metro Line 3. The PSOE party will soon present a motion in the Senate to back this demand.
