The voice of a veteran bullfighting surgeon has introduced a note of caution into the atmosphere, following the incident involving a well-known matador in the Seville bullring. The specialist, with experience as head of surgery at the Las Palomas bullring in Algeciras, has emphasized the seriousness of the wound, especially its impact on the rectum and sphincter, urging prudence regarding the matador's recovery.
The incident occurred during the fight with the fourth bull, when the animal gored the matador, causing a deep wound. The image of the matador falling helplessly shocked attendees, and the bullring's infirmary became the center of attention. Hours later, the medical report confirmed a bull horn injury to the posterior anal margin, with a trajectory of about ten centimeters, affecting the sphincter apparatus and with perforation of the rectal wall, classifying the prognosis as "very serious."
“"The rectal injury is no minor matter, and especially if it affects the sphincter… it is quite delicate."
The surgeon stressed that, although the initial surgical intervention may have been effective, the real challenge lies in the postoperative evolution. He warned about the need to monitor for possible complications such as fistulas or infections, given the delicacy of the affected area. The matador, 46 years old, spent the night in the ICU of Viamed Hospital in Seville, sedated but conscious, and his condition is reported as stable, though in pain as the effects of painkillers subside.
This incident has generated great anticipation in the bullfighting world, which is now holding its breath awaiting the matador's recovery. His upcoming engagements, including an event in Valladolid on May 10 and at the Jerez de la Frontera Horse Fair on May 15 and 16, had already sold out all tickets, underscoring his significant presence in the current scene.
