The northern mountain ranges of Andalusia will experience the return of storms this Thursday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow alert in Aracena, the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, Sierra Morena, and Los Pedroches. Showers and storms are expected, accompanied by strong wind gusts, while the rest of the region will see mostly clear or little cloudy skies, with high temperatures, especially around the Guadalquivir river.
High temperature warnings will remain in effect until Saturday, June 20. The campiñas of Córdoba and Sevilla, Sierra Morena, El Condado in Jaén, and the Guadalquivir valley in Jaén will record highs of 38ºC to 39ºC, potentially reaching 40ºC locally. In the provincial capitals, daytime temperatures will range between 30ºC in Cádiz and 39ºC in Córdoba. Winds will be variable, with moderate easterly intervals on the eastern Mediterranean coast and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Friday, June 19, is expected to be a stable day, although diurnal cloud development will persist in the mountains, with occasional showers and storms not ruled out. Tropical nights will become widespread across the community, with predicted nighttime lows of 38ºC in Sevilla and 37ºC in Granada and Jaén. These values are a prelude to what is shaping up to be the first heatwave of the summer.
Starting Saturday, June 20, a period of very high temperatures will begin, lasting at least through the first few days of the following week. Minimum temperatures will be around 20ºC in Huelva and 24ºC in Almería, while maximums will rise to 41ºC in Córdoba, 42ºC in Montoro, and 43ºC in Andújar. An influx of suspended dust is also expected in the far east.
On Sunday, June 21, the temperature increase is expected to be even more pronounced. The synoptic configuration features an anticyclonic ridge that, combined with a small upper-level low (dana) to the west of the peninsula, will favor the northward displacement of a very warm and dry Saharan air mass. This, along with high insolation for the season, will cause temperatures to continue rising.
Daytime highs will soar, reaching values such as 41ºC in Almodóvar del Río, 42ºC in Linares, and 44ºC in Andújar. Yellow alerts have been activated in the sierras of Cazorla and Segura, and the Genil basin, for temperatures up to 38ºC during this day.
On Monday, June 22, temperatures will remain unchanged or slightly increase, with widespread tropical nights and maximums ranging from 39ºC to 42ºC in the Guadalquivir valley, including locations like Montilla, Marchena, Jaén, Úbeda, Santa Elena, La Puerta del Segura, Córdoba, Aldeaquemada, Villacarrillo, Écija, Almodóvar del Río, and Montoro, with 43ºC forecast for Andújar.
Tuesday, June 23, could mark the peak of the episode, with predicted maximums of 46ºC in Andújar, 45ºC in Burguillos, Córdoba, Almodóvar del Río, and Montoro, and 44ºC in Sevilla, Lebrija, Puente Genil, Marchena, or Utrera.
From Wednesday, June 24, temperatures are expected to begin a slight descent. However, Aemet warns of high uncertainty regarding the intensity and duration of the phenomenon due to the influx of haze, mid-level and high clouds, and possible afternoon storms.
