Málaga Showcases Trinitarian Sisters' Embroidery Legacy

The Brotherhoods Association of Holy Week in Málaga inaugurates an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the Trinitarian Sisters in the city, highlighting their valuable artisanal embroidery workshop.

The headquarters of the Agrupación de Cofradías de Semana Santa de Málaga is hosting the exhibition 'Hermanas Trinitarias en Málaga: 100 años tejiendo esperanza' (Trinitarian Sisters in Málaga: 100 years weaving hope), an initiative that explores the congregation's trajectory in the capital through its renowned embroidery workshop.
Organized by the Congregation of Trinitarian Sisters, with the collaboration of the Agrupación de Cofradías and the support of Fundación Unicaja, the exhibition is part of the commemorative events for the centenary of the Trinitarian presence in Málaga.
The exhibition, covering half a century of artisanal work, is spread across the Temporary Exhibition Hall and the Humero Hall, both located on the ground floor of the San Julián complex. Visitors can admire significant pieces of Málaga's brotherhood heritage, crafted by the Trinitarian Sisters from the 1930s until the closure of their workshop in 1984.
Among the most notable works are two large processional cloaks: that of María Santísima de la Estrella and that of Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor, belonging to the Reales Cofradías Fusionadas. The exhibition also includes a wide selection of accoutrements, trousseau pieces, and processional elements primarily linked to brotherhoods such as Estrella, Zamarrilla, or Pollinica, as well as other corporations from the capital and the province.
The exhibition itinerary is complemented by sketches, designs, and working materials that illustrate the creative process of the workshop. Many of these pieces, some unpublished and loaned from private collections, are based on designs by artists such as Juan Martínez Cerrillo or Juan Casielles, and by brotherhood members like José García Ojeda or Concepción Viano.
Beyond its artistic value, the exhibition highlights the important social dimension of the embroidery workshop, which served as a tool for training and promotion for young women in vulnerable situations, in line with the founding charism of the congregation.
The exhibition, curated by the president of the Culture Commission of the Agrupación de Cofradías, benefited from the setup, advice, and conservation work of Estudio Santa Conserva.
The exhibition can be visited free of charge until May 30, from Monday to Friday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On the occasion of La Noche en Blanco, on Saturday, May 16, the opening hours will be extended until 1:00 AM.
