The municipal socialist deputy spokesperson, Begoña Medina, joined the aquatic rescue workers' protest, warning that the reduced staff and deficient watchtowers pose a "serious danger" to the city and its visitors.
The socialist representative urged Mayor Francisco de la Torre to intervene urgently to resolve the conflict. She emphasized that the city's 14 kilometers of coastline are covered by an insufficient number of lifeguards, who also face "precarious salaries that are not commensurate with such an important service."
“"Lifeguards are neither sufficient nor do they have the means they need to save lives."
According to the deputy spokesperson, there are currently only eight lifeguards for eight beaches, a situation she described as "reckless and truly irresponsible," considering that each lifeguard should cover a two-kilometer perimeter. She directly appealed to the mayor to take action, given the inaction of the person responsible for the beaches.
A spokesperson for the workers' collective, Emiliano Cortés, detailed the mobilization schedule. He warned that if an agreement with the company is not reached by next Thursday, protests will continue with a strike starting on Saturday, May 9, and lasting until May 17 at 10:00 PM. The spokesperson described the current situation on the beaches as "unsustainable."
