The Málaga City Council has taken another step forward in the Auditorium project with the approval of an addendum to the collaboration agreement signed with the Junta de Andalucía in December 2024. This agreement details the granting of a direct subsidy for the financing of the construction and equipping of the cultural space.
The modification of the agreement aims to adapt the financing schedule to the project's execution pace, including the deadlines for execution and justification of the subsidized action. The preliminary market consultation, initiated on June 8 by the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, is in its final stages and seeks to allow interested companies to review and, if necessary, adjust the tender specifications. The total budget for the Auditorium exceeds 200 million euros.
The timeline set by the mayor includes awarding the works within approximately two months after the preliminary consultation, with the goal of starting construction before the end of the year, although the actual commencement may be delayed until early next year. The construction period is estimated at around 48 months. The management of the auditorium, including the tendering process, will be handled by the company Promálaga, leveraging its experience with the Trade Fair and Congress Center (Fycma).
The funding for the project, totaling over 209 million euros, will come from the Junta de Andalucía (25 million euros) and the Málaga City Council (20 million euros, of which nearly 7 million have already been allocated). The possibility of additional private investment is being considered, including Cajamar's interest in acquiring naming rights for the Auditorium for 40 million euros, as well as selling naming rights for the halls and the tour.
The Auditorium's design, the result of an international competition won by architects Federico Soriano and Agustín Benedito in 2008, envisions a facility with a main hall seating up to 1,743 people, a chamber hall for 465, rehearsal rooms, a didactic room, a library, a phonotheque, and other spaces. The stage machinery, one of the most complex and technically demanding components, has a material execution budget exceeding 20 million euros.
