FIBA's Basketball Champions League (BCL) is gaining relevance within the NBA Europe project, solidifying itself as a fundamental access route for the future competition. According to statements by Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, during the NBA Finals, operational meetings are frequent and the project is progressing without changes, regardless of agreements with the EuroLeague.

The new access structure for the competition, scheduled for October 2027, will grant a direct spot to the BCL champion. Additionally, teams finishing second and third in the Final Four will have the opportunity to qualify through a playoff tournament, competing alongside top teams from national leagues.

The NBA Europe model includes 12 permanent spots and 4 spots decided by sporting merit, aiming to value both domestic leagues and the BCL. The Greek executive highlighted Unicaja as an example of a club that can aspire to the top competition through sporting achievements, emphasizing the importance of an open system that allows clubs to grow.

A key aspect for Unicaja is the financial side: teams qualifying for the new competition will receive the same initial and performance-based revenues as permanent franchises. This formula aims to attract investment and enhance the competitiveness of European clubs.

The BCL is thus becoming a privileged entry point, not only through the champion's direct spot but also through the opportunities available to other top teams via qualifying tournaments. The third and fourth-place match of the 26/27 BCL Final Four will gain new significance, offering a ticket to the NBA Europe preliminary phase.

Unicaja, established as a benchmark in FIBA's competition, sees this new scenario as a real opportunity to aspire to the continental elite. The intention is to design a calendar compatible with national leagues and selections, ensuring the availability of top players.
