Hiking trail in Frigiliana, Malaga, with irrigation channel and river.

The picturesque town of Frigiliana, in the province of Malaga, offers a captivating hiking route that winds between the historic Acequia Lízar and the Higuerón River, a journey of almost eight kilometers that merges heritage and nature.

Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Malaga, Frigiliana takes on a special charm in spring. Its cobbled streets are adorned with flowers and its whitewashed facades gleam under the April sun, creating an idyllic Andalusian scene. It is during this season that the Acequia Lízar and Higuerón River route reveals its full splendor, with lush vegetation and optimal water flow for the river section.
The complete route covers 7.74 kilometers and is estimated to take about two hours and ten minutes, making it accessible for intermediate-level hikers. The adventure begins in the town center, where signage guides visitors to the various available options. The trail ascends through the narrow streets of the historic quarter, passing by the Castle and offering panoramic views of Frigiliana and the coast of Nerja from its viewpoints.
The historical heart of the route is the Acequia Lízar, a remnant of an ancient Moorish irrigation system that once powered mills. The path runs along this acequia for approximately two and a half kilometers, with the Higuerón River gorge in the background and the peaks of the Sierra de la Almijara, including the imposing Pico del Cielo, dominating the horizon. Although much of the section is protected by fences, caution is advised in unprotected areas.
After the acequia, the trail reaches the point where it collects water from the Higuerón River. Here, hikers can choose to continue along the acequia or descend directly to the riverbed. This second option offers a more immersive experience, with several river crossings where getting wet is likely. The river section concludes near the Pozo Batán, a large pool where the acequia discharges its flow before the return to the village.
The ascent back to Frigiliana is via a track below the village, from which the Ingenio and part of the old fortress, elements of great heritage value, can be seen. This route, although not fully adapted for mass tourism, offers an element of authenticity and adventure that makes it a unique proposal in the province of Malaga.
