While other celebrations such as the Pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Cabeza in Andújar and preparations for the Virgen del Rocío capture attention, Porcuna is getting ready for its own significant pilgrimage. This festival, which runs from May 3rd to 10th, is a cornerstone of the religious calendar in Jaén and Andalusia.
The Virgen de Alharilla de Porcuna, perpetual patron mayor of the town, has been venerated since the mid-13th century, making it one of the oldest pilgrimages in Andalusia. Its historical and cultural importance was recognized in 2008 when it was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of Andalusia, annually attracting over 30,000 people.
Another important milestone in the history of this devotion was the Canonical and Pontifical Coronation of the image, celebrated in August 2014, which underscores the deep faith and tradition surrounding this Marian invocation.
The program for the Pilgrimage of the Virgen de Alharilla 2026 includes a series of events culminating on Sunday, May 10th, the main day of the celebration. Activities begin with the inaugural proclamation and continue with the children's pilgrimage, the floral offering, and the traditional horse rides, where riders and carriages are adorned for the occasion.
On Sunday, May 10th, devotees gather at the Hermitage of Alharilla, four kilometers from Porcuna, for the procession of the patron saint. This day is marked by a strong sense of community and brotherhood, with the participation of confraternities from across the area who come to pay homage to the Virgin.
