The University Hospital of Jaén, part of the Andalusian Health Service, hosted a ceremony honoring organ and tissue donors from the province. The event, held in the ‘Garden of Solidarity’ at the Neurotraumatology Hospital, coincides with the commemoration of the National Day of Organ Donation and aims to express gratitude for the generosity and altruism of donors and their families.
Attendees included the hospital's managing director, María Belén Martínez, along with members of the management team and the medical coordinator of Transplants, María Guerrero. Representatives from patient and family associations, such as the president of ALCER Jaén, Ángel Castillo, also participated. This initiative is part of the events scheduled in the province to promote organ and tissue donation.
During the ceremony, the vital importance of donor solidarity was highlighted, enabling the improvement and saving of lives through transplants. So far this year, the province of Jaén has recorded nine organ donations, eight of which occurred at the University Hospital of Jaén and one at the San Agustín Hospital in Linares. Additionally, 38 tissue donors were registered, the highest figure in all of Andalusia.
As a new feature, a collaborative tree-shaped mural was unveiled in the ‘Garden of Solidarity’, where professionals, patients, and families paid tribute to the donors. Prior to this, a commemorative plaque was placed and flowers were presented.
The Transplant Coordination expressed gratitude for the collaboration of various groups, including patient associations, media, magistrates, forensic experts, healthcare professionals, and security forces, who are crucial in fostering a supportive environment for donation.
In 2025, the province of Jaén registered 28 organ donations, benefiting 76 individuals, with 19 of these also involving tissues. An additional 83 tissue-only donations were recorded, positioning the province prominently in this category within Andalusia.
In the first five months of 2026, there have been nine organ donations (five from brain death and four from circulatory arrest) and 38 tissue donations across the hospitals in Jaén. Of the organ donations, eight were performed at the University Hospital of Jaén and one at the San Agustín Hospital in Linares.
The Transplant Coordination team at the University Hospital of Jaén, led by medical coordinator María Guerrero and comprising Luis Yágüez, Tania Amat, and Javier Moya, is responsible for organizing donation processes, informing families, and conducting public awareness activities.
