The Xauen Hotel in the provincial capital of Jaén hosted this Wednesday the constituent assembly of the Association of Writers of the Province of Jaén ‘Grafemas’. The entity is founded with the support of more than a hundred founding members, including writers born in or residing in the Jaén territory, and aims to become a reference point for the literary and cultural life of the province.
Around 40 people from various municipalities in Jaén attended the event. During the assembly, the foundational statutes were approved, the first board of directors was elected, and up to ten working areas were launched. José María Hermoso was elected president, accompanied on the board by Juan de Dios Valverde, Encarnación Sánchez, and Carmen María Fernández-Kofbler, along with about twenty members from different towns integrated into areas such as institutional affairs, training, communication, social action, literary genres, and administrative management.
Among the main objectives of ‘Grafemas’, as outlined in its statutes, are the promotion and preservation of the province's literary and cultural heritage, the defense of the interests of Jaén writers, the promotion of awareness campaigns about local literature and culture, and the establishment of a stable channel of communication with public administrations and provincial institutions.
The assembly also set the annual membership fee, agreed on the need to find a permanent headquarters, and outlined the first initiatives. These include the official public presentation of the association, establishing contacts with the main provincial administrations, and promoting greater presence of Jaén authors in schools, libraries, the Book Fair, and the Towns Fair.
