The Jaén Medical Union has filed a complaint against the Management of the Jaén University Hospital, alleging that obstacles are being placed on the family conciliation rights of female doctors in the Emergency Service. According to the union, management is refusing to make the necessary hires for nine doctors to benefit from legally established reduced working hours for childcare.
Traditionally, this reduction in working hours was managed by accumulating hours into full shifts, which facilitated both conciliation and the hiring of substitute staff. However, the hospital management has informed the affected doctors that no new hires will be made and that the reduction will be applied on a daily hourly basis. The union interprets this measure as a strategy to discourage doctors from exercising their rights.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that seven resident doctors are completing their training soon and have expressed their interest in working in the hospital's emergency department. The union warns that failing to hire these physicians, at a time when the province needs to retain medical talent, could force them to seek employment elsewhere, later citing a lack of staff to hire.
“"Once they are pushed out due to the impossibility of accessing contracts, they will argue to us that there is a shortage of doctors to hire."
This issue arises just before the holiday season, with the Management having presented no hiring plan to ensure emergency care during the summer. The Jaén Medical Union demands an immediate rectification of the current approach and the hiring of available doctors, threatening to undertake all possible legal and union actions to defend the rights of the female workers.
