The initiative, aimed at revitalizing the San Francisco and Peñamefécit markets, will dedicate each month to a specific product or group of quality products from the province. The Deputy of Agriculture, Isabel Uceda, emphasized that the goal is to "promote Degusta Jaén" and "turn traditional markets into vibrant spaces, linked to the region's products and this quality brand".
This month of September, the campaign focuses on Jaén vermouth, following the launch in July with Jimena breva figs. For October, fried potatoes and nuts will be promoted; in November, craft beers and Segureño sheep lamb; and in December, traditional sweets, mantecados, and liqueurs. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (AOVE) and jams will be featured in January; honey and chocolates in February; smoked trout and pickles in March; pâtés and mountain cured meats in April; wines and cheeses in May; and the campaign will conclude in June with cherries from Castillo de Locubín and Torres.
Jaén's Councilor for Youth and Communication, José Manuel Higueras, described the traditional markets as "nerve centers of Jaén's gastronomy" and highlighted the importance of these activities for "supporting entrepreneurship and promoting brands that generate employment".
Daniel Berrios, secretary of the retailers' association at the San Francisco market, thanked the initiative, which represents "important support for local products and traditional markets." Participating companies will have stands for two days each month to showcase and sell their products at thirteen stalls in both markets. This month, Vermut Papatán and Vermut Loa are the featured businesses.
Antonio Caballero, from Vermut Papatán, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate, emphasizing the markets' role as "nerve centers" and his desire to "contribute our small grain of sand" to their preservation.
